There are several tents on the market and many of them would be excellent for my national park tour. However, there is just something appealing about a simple, rugged approach to camping. Tarps can adapt to any landscape and require very little luggage space. With a motorcycle and my own crazy drive, having a camp set up require very little room and weight goes a long way. Light weight dome tents exist, at a price, but where’s the fun in that?

If wind conditions change mid-sleep, you can always do what I will be doing, situate your rucksack to block the incoming drift. Forget an expensive, super light-weight, ultra-thin tent. Give me a tough, rugged, military-grade, time-tested tarp, a hiking rod, and rope. If camping is expensive then you’re doing it wrong!
